Getting Dressed Mindfully: What is it, Why & How?
Getting Dressed, With Mindfulness
“The What, Why And How Of Getting Dressed Mindfully.”
Here is a getting dressed mindfully practice to “try on” as you dress for your day.
Often enough, choosing clothes is automatic. We move through this task by being influenced by the weather. What working conditions we are entering? What doesn’t need to be ironed? Or the color and comfort of our clothes. All these influences are often at work. But not consciously known.
With this practice, you can expand awareness of the “what” to wear. It includes the conditions influencing “why” you are making these choices. As well as “how” it feels.
Dressing mindfully, can all be brought into your awareness.:
- Are you dressing for yourself or others?
- Do you dress caring for your comfort and warmth?
- Are you choosing clothing that is appropriate for the task?
- How are you caring for yourself or as you make these choices?
- Is there appreciation for the bodily movement needed to put on each item of clothing?
Choosing to be mindfully present while getting dressed and making these choices. Actually, shows how we dress can teach us a lot about the way we balance preferences and address self-care.
Try engaging with this practice each day this week.
Other Informal Mindfulness Practices
“short and simple practices”
Informal mindfulness practices are often done throughout our day. They tend to be shorter in length and draw attention to the physical sensations in our bodies.
Examples are:
- Washing our hands.
- Stopping & Dropping.
- Opening & Feeling our bodies posture.
- Resting in the sensations of the in-breath.
Getting dressed mindfully is a wonderful way to begin your day in a calm and balanced state. It’s especially convenient because it takes dressing behavior you do each morning, and imbues it with a mindful focus.
Being confident and in control first thing in the morning helps relieve feelings of stress and worry.
