How do I select the right teacher?
At present Mindfulness teachers are not regulated, and there is no governing or regulatory bodies as such.
M.B.S.R. and M.B.C.T. trainers all deliver a set curriculum, with standard core content and delivery methods which have been widely researched and proven to be effective.
In order to teach Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), teachers need to follow the curriculums set out by John Kabat-Zinn (MBSR) or Zindel Segal, Williams and Teasdale (MBCT). MBSR/ MBCT teachers normally go through a three stage training process:
- Attendance & participation in a MBSR / MBCT course
- Attend teacher training
- Co-teach several times
For your online course do I have to do it on a certain day? Thanks!
No, You can do the MBSR training at your own pace.
How do I do the self-retreat?
- The retreat is done in the setting that you prefer.
- We will created a comfortable six hour schedule for you to follow.
- To get the most benefit from the mindfulness retreat, please consider limiting all “electronic” distractions.
- If you choose to do the retreat at home. We suggest telling family member and friends that you will not be available for 6 hours.
Can I teach MBSR after taking this course? (MBSR Certification)
No, Taking an MBSR 8 week program does not allow the teaching of the MBSR program.
To become an MBSR teacher first requires being accepted and then trained through the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
BUT, completing this 8-week www.MBSRtraining.com program, fulfills the first requirement for being accepted into the MBSR teacher training program.
Note: You can receive a Certificate of Completion of this 80-hour MBSRtraining.com Online program.
With this Certification of Completion you can offer aspects of the M.B.S.R. to others and groups. But not represent, as a fully certified MBSR teacher.
The Process Of Becoming A Certificated MBSR Teacher:

I would like to understand how this is certified as the work is done in solitude.
[I would like to understand how this is certified as the work is done in solitude. I have no problems with online learning, or with mindfulness as I have been using it as part of my professional and personal life for more than 12 years. However, I do wish to be able to say my training is up to date, my personal practice is slipping, and I am interested. I just want to know how you vouch for the participation and/or learning by the participant(s).]
Answer- Topic Timers:
The MBSR Training online program has ability to set timers for each of the 8 weeks of the program. The mind has often wants to jump ahead and not stay with the task at hand.
Example, Sunday May-1, Lesson-1 is done plus 6 days of practice before Sunday May-8 when Lesson-2 is available. (Lesson -2 does not have to be started yet)
Certificate of Participation:
This is where the Certificate of Participation comes in. The training program can tell that the student has not rushed ahead. Each of the 12 lesson topic can also have timers installed.
Example, if a meditation lesson topic-3.6 is 15 minutes long. The student cannot advance to the next lesson topic-3.7 till the 15 minutes has elapsed.
Monitoring:
The progress of each person can be monitored.
Hi, How can I confirm this M.B.S.R. training to be legit and approved/endorsed by Jon Kabat-Zinn?
Thank you for the great questions.I was trained at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in 2007 as a M.B.S.R. trainer and have been teaching the M.B.S.R. program since. The online training includes 9 videos by Jon Kabat-Zinn and many more talks and guided meditations, body scans, yoga etc. Each MBSR Online Training session begins with a list what is going to be covered in that session. (see example below)
Example-Lesson Topic, 1.1
Introduction
“Present-moment awareness of body sensations, thoughts, and emotions.“
Outline:
This 3 hour lesson includes the establishment of a learning contract with the participant. We are experientially introduced to mindful eating, mindfulness of breathing and the body scan.
This week’s home· practice is a guided body scan for 45 minutes as a means of beginning to learn to become familiar with mindful awareness of the body.
Theme:
From our point of view, there is more right with us than wrong with us, no matter what challenges we are facing. Challenges and difficulties are workable. Mindful awareness, defined as paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally, is fundamental to this work since the present moment is the only time anyone ever has to perceive, learn, grow or change.
Lesson-1 Sequence:
- Welcome and brief introduction:
Opening meditation:
- Becoming aware of thoughts, emotions, and sensations in the present moment.
Review of guidelines for participation:
- self-care
- confidentiality
- communication with instructor
Guided individual internal reflection:
- What are you here for?
- What is your intention?
- What do you really want?
- What has brought you here?
- What are your expectations for the program?
Yoga:
- 15 minute introduction to standing Mountain Pose and other standing poses.
Raisin-eating exercise:
- Reflecting (not taking a personal position) on the experience.
- Focusing on direct sensory observation -what can be seen, felt, smelled, tasted, heard.
- Noticing if your observations of the immediate experience of mindfully eating, are becoming personal opinions and theories.
Abdominal breathing:
- Notice the moment-to-moment awareness of the eating awareness and to experience (beginners mind & non-judgment) of the breath in the same way.
- Introduction various comfortable postures for lying down: corpse pose and sitting in a chair.
- Focusing on the feeling of the abdomen rising and falling with the in-breath and the out-breath, mindfully “tasting” the breath in the same way open minded way as tasting the raisin.
- Non-judgmentally observing one’s own breathing from moment to moment; and gently bringing one’s attention back to the breath and the present moment when it wanders.
From mindfulness of breathing, we move into the guided body scan where we lie on floor or sit in comfortable position.
Summary:
We finish with an inner reflection on our experiences of the body scan and lesson 1.
Assignments:
Instructions for use of the 45 minute Body Scan recording for home practice during week
Home Practice Assignment:
- Listening to the Body Scan recording ~ 6 days this week
- Home Practice Manual: 9 dots exercise
- Eat one meal this week mindfully
- (Optional assignment -read “Upstream/Downstream” by Donald Ardell)
Closing:
- Guided meditation of ‘Stopping & Dropping’

Stress Reduction Clinic Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Curriculum Guide® 2009
Melissa Blacker, MA, Florence Meleo-Meyer, MS, MA, Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, Saki Santorelli, Ed.D, MA
Overview This 8-week, 9-session MBSR curriculum is based on systematic and intensive training in mindfulness meditation and mindful hatha yoga. The curriculum, developed in the Stress Reduction Clinic over the course of three decades, is designed to teach program participants how to integrate and apply mindfulness in their everyday lives and to the range of challenges arising from medical and psychological conditions and life stresses.
Embedded within the context of Mind/Body and Integrative Medicine, the MBSR curriculum focuses on the experiential cultivation of both “formal” and “informal” mindfulness practices as a foundation for the cultivation of positive health behaviors and psychological and emotional resilience that can be effectively utilized across the adult life span. The approach supports the learning, strengthening and integration of a range of mindfulness-based self regulatory skills through the development and refinement of inherent internal resources. A primary aim is to cultivate ways of learning and being that can be utilized far beyond the completion of the program.
