Common Questions

Q: I have never meditated before. Is this suitable for beginners?
A: Absolutely. My teaching is simple, step-by-step, and stripped of confusing jargon. If you can breathe, you can do this.

Q: I suffer from chronic pain or illness. Can I still participate?
A: Yes. This program was originally designed in a hospital setting. I live with chronic pain myself. We will not try to “think away” the pain. Instead, we learn gentle ways to be present with our bodies so that the pain does not dominate our lives.

Q: Do I need to sit on the floor in the “Lotus” position?
A: Goodness, no! I certainly don’t. You can practice in a chair, in a recliner, or even lying down. Comfort is essential.

Q: Is this a religious practice?
A: No. MBSR is a secular, medical-based program based on psychology and neuroscience. People of all faiths (and no faith) are welcome.

Q: What is “Self-Talk” and why do you emphasize it?
A: I focus on the voice inside the silence. We will practice using specific, kind phrases to soothe the mind when it gets scared or angry (“Freedom Self-Talk”).
