Mindful Breathing: A Simple MBSR Practice

Mindful breathing is one of the simplest and most accessible ways to begin mindfulness practice.

In this practice, you gently bring attention to the breath, noticing each inhale and exhale as it comes and goes.

What Is Mindful Breathing?

Mindful breathing is the practice of bringing gentle, steady attention to the breath.

You are not trying to control the breath. You are learning to notice it as it naturally moves in and out of the body.

The breath becomes an anchor — something you can return to again and again.

Why Practice Mindful Breathing?

Many people find that their attention is often pulled into thoughts, worries, or plans.

Mindful breathing offers a simple way to come back to the present moment.

  • It can support a calmer relationship with stress
  • It builds awareness of the present moment
  • It creates a steady place to return to
  • It helps interrupt cycles of overthinking
  • It is simple enough to use anywhere

How to Practice

  1. Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
  2. Allow your body to settle.
  3. Bring attention to the breath.
  4. Notice the feeling of breathing in and out.
  5. You might feel the breath in the nose, chest, or belly.
  6. There is no need to change anything.
  7. When the mind wanders, gently return to the breath.

Practice reminder: The goal is not to have a quiet mind. The practice is to notice and return.

A Simple 3-Minute Practice

You may begin with a short version:

Feel the breath coming in.
Feel the breath going out.

When the mind wanders, gently return to the breath.

Stay with this for a few minutes.

Then slowly open your attention back to your surroundings.

When the Mind Wanders

The mind will wander. This is natural.

Each time you notice wandering, that moment of noticing is part of the practice.

You might gently say:

  • “Thinking.”
  • “Wandering.”
  • “Coming back.”
  • “Breathing.”

Go Gently

If the breath feels difficult to focus on, you can bring attention to the body, sounds, or a simple sense of being here.

Mindfulness is not about forcing attention. It is about returning with kindness.
