Mindful Movement: A Gentle MBSR Practice
Mindful movement is a simple way to bring awareness into the body through gentle stretching and movement.
In MBSR, mindful movement is not about exercise, performance, or achieving a result. It is about feeling the body from the inside, moving with awareness, and noticing sensations as they arise.
What Is Mindful Movement?
Mindful movement involves slow, gentle movements where you stay connected to the sensations of the body.
It may include stretching, lifting the arms, turning the body, or simple standing movements done with awareness.
Why Practice Mindful Movement?
Many people feel disconnected from their body, especially during stress. Mindful movement helps restore that connection in a safe and gentle way.
This practice may support:
- Greater awareness of the body
- Release of physical tension
- A softer relationship with discomfort
- Improved balance and coordination
- A calm transition between activities
How to Practice
- Stand or sit in a comfortable position.
- Begin by noticing your body as it is.
- Slowly raise one arm, noticing the movement.
- Pause briefly at the top.
- Slowly lower the arm.
- Repeat with awareness.
- Continue with simple movements of your choice.
Practice reminder: Move within your comfort range. There is no need to push or strain.
A Simple 5-Minute Practice
Stand comfortably.
Feel your feet on the ground.
Slowly raise your arms.
Notice the sensations in the shoulders and arms.
Pause gently.
Lower the arms slowly.
Repeat this movement several times with awareness.
Then stand quietly and feel the body.

Go Gently
If you experience discomfort, you can reduce the movement, pause, or rest.
Mindful movement is not about achieving a stretch. It is about learning to listen to your body.
